Most savvy individuals and organizations
will tell you that knowing as much as possible about yourself
and those with whom you work is essential for success. As
a result, a number of instruments have been developed to deliver
this information.
The most popular of these is the Myers Briggs, which gives
the user information on communication style, attention to
detail, decision-making, and how one deals with change.
Unfortunately, there are several problems
with the manner in which this information is delivered:
1. The language used to describe the different personality
types (such as sensor, judger, and perceiver) is archaic and
less than clear. For example, sensor doesnt
mean sensitive, judger doesnt mean judgmental,
and perceiver doesnt describe someone who
is perceptive.
2. There is somewhat of an all-or-nothing
method of classification. In other words, one person could
be scored as an ENFP (extravert, intuitive, feeler, perceiver)
while another could come out as an ISTJ (introvert, sensor,
thinker, judger). These individuals would seem to have exactly
the opposite personality types, even though their scores could
possibly be only a few points apart.
3. Of course, there are the four-letter
codes themselves which are not only hard to interpret, but
even harder to remember. It is very common for individuals
to leave a Myers-Briggs presentation asking, Now what
was I again... I, N, T, S, L-M-N-O-P??? WHAT?!?!?!
4. Finally, the way that the information
is displayed (a chart with 16 different boxes) is confusing,
especially if you are wanting to get a snapshot of what is
going on with your team or department.
So, what can be done? Is there a way to
deliver this vital information on communication style, decision-making,
etc., in a manner that is both clear and accurate? The answer
is yes! ...
