"The first rule of holes: If you are in one, stop digging."
"The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth of the hole."

"The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth of the hole."
I love these little quotes because they remind us to always be aware of whether or not our habits, choices, and behaviors are really serving us. So often we find ourselves continuing to do what doesn't work (which may be what got us in the hole in the first place) and wondering why things are getting worse. It's sort of like the thought about the definition of insanity, i.e., doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. It also reminds me of a poignant little story called An Autobiography in Five Chapters:
AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY in FIVE CHAPTERS
Chapter One
I walk down a street and fall in a hole. It's dark and uncomfortable, but it's not my fault! It takes a long time for me to find my way out.
Chapter Two
I walk down a street and fall in a hole. It's still dark and uncomfortable, but I can see how I may have had something to do with falling in the hole in the first place. It doesn't take near as long to get out.
Chapter Three
I walk down a street and fall in a hole. I see exactly how I got here and I get out almost immediately.
Chapter Four
I walk down a street and walk around the hole.
Chapter Five
I walk down a different street!
You see, what we are talking about here isn?t about just avoiding the holes in life (i.e. becoming less stressed, frustrated, angry, etc.). It?s about changing the way we approach life itself, and making this way of dealing with life (versus life dealing with us) so powerful that it?s like walking down an entirely different street! Our challenge is to take responsibility for where we are so that we can be able to respond in a way that is congruent with where we want to be. Here's to a life of awareness, learning, and growing . . . and walking down different streets.

Take care and God bless, Dr. Bill
